Religion and Violence
"The Boondock Saints" portrays religion as being supportive of violence. Stone (1999) in an analysis of 180 films argues that a movie employs the theme of Religious support of violence there usually is a "recurrent image": the crusader, the spiritual warrior, or divine violence. It is difficult to place the McManus brothers in one category. Like the crusader they honestly believe their cause is just. Like the spiritual warrior their devotion, in this case to the Catholic faith, fuels their mission. Finally their mission is one of divine violence as the God in the movie who speaks to the brothers is not the God of the New Testament which speaks of love and forgiveness. It is the stern father figure God of the Old Testament who is quick to punish the wicked. The connection the movie makes to religion and violence is not subtle.
