Saints and Sinners
The "saints" of The Boondock Saints are the McManus brothers who are presented as devout-practicing Irish Roman Catholics who show great concern for their family and friends but prove to be expert killers in the pursuit of their version of justice. In the movie, the brothers are presented as good men doing bad things for a good reason. By killing they are sinning but being on a mission from God means this signing is justified (when a sin is not really a sin). Denzy in an online article titled "Biblical Allusions, Biblical Illusions: Hollywood Blockbuster and Scripture" notes how the brothers quote scripture "as they slaughter, execution style, sleazy criminals." She sees the movie as raising questions about, "redemption, sinfulness, and the way the Bible is used to justify an individual's morals and actions." One film reviewer saw the brother's actions as a form of religious extremism because their religious convictions are used to justify violence.
